The Quest for Performance | Employee Development is Broken!

What?? Employee development is broken? Does that sound crazy to you?

If you’re a learning and development professional, you may be thinking that this statement doesn’t seem true. Maybe you’re thinking: “Our development program is great! It’s not broken!” “We have a great learning and development program. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with it.”

And that could be true! But, take a couple of minutes and check out why we believe employee development could be even better!

It’s reported that $165 billion dollars is spent every year in corporate training in the US. It’s also reported that 80% of executives believe that employee development should be at the top of the organization’s priority list (Source: 2015 ATD State of the Industry).

So, what’s the problem? Obviously training is important with so much money being spent and so many executives seeing the importance of it. Organizations are putting their money where their mouth is, so why is development broken?

For all of this great training, only 8% of executives report business impact from employee development (Source: 2017 LinkedIn Workplace Learning Report). Even with great training, executives aren’t seeing enough impact on the actual business KPIs.

This is a broken system. Learning has to have purpose or it doesn’t really do any good. Learning has to be approached with performance and ultimately, positive impact on your business in mind.
